The 2018 Honda Clarity range now includes plug-in hybrid and electric versions that join the Clarity Fuel Cell. All versions of the Clarity share the same basic design, they are front-wheel-drive, four-door sedans that are similar to an Accord in size. That leaves us with the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, the newly introduced and final piece of the Clarity triad. Comparable to vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt or the Toyota Prius Prime, the PHEV is a plug-in hybrid that can recharge at home and drive an EPA-estimated 48 miles on pure electric power before it switches over to regular hybrid gasoline power. Of the three Clarity versions, the Plug-In Hybrid is the most convincing and has the broadest appeal to consumers. It's comfortable, has a solid amount of electric range, and should serve you well as a frugal and well-equipped hybrid. What the plug-in Clarity Touring does best is tour. The ride is cushy, and tire and wind noise is subdued even when there's virtually no engine or motor noise competing with it. The EPA estimates the plug-in Clarity's electric-only range at 48 miles; we went 41 miles at 75 mph before the engine fired up. That makes the Clarity our new plug-in champ, dethroning the Chevy Volt, which went 37 miles before its gas engine kicked in. The plug-in Clarity feels like a fully realized car and not just a jiggered-with Accord. Honda seems to be getting comfortable with alternative propulsion, and the seamless operation of the Clarity's hybrid system is encouraging. The 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid operates seamlessly between electric and hybrid operation, such that it's difficult to tell when the engine is on. Forty-seven miles of purely electric range means no gasoline for a 20-mile commute. Standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay make for excellent phone integration. The 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid can deliver excellent fuel economy, depending on how frequently you charge the battery, while offering comfort and refined road manners.

We've assumed a fuel economy of 21 miles per gallon for a comparable gasoline powered premium sedan, for example, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S550. We've also assumed the national average of $0.13 per kilowatt-hour for electricity, 10% charging on Tesla’s Supercharger network and $2.70 per gallon for premium gasoline over the next five years.
Florida has allowed owners of hybrid, electric and other low-emission vehicles to ride in high-occupancy-vehicle lanes with only one person in the car between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. And with the introduction of the I-95 express lanes, they don't have to pay tolls.
EVs benefit from not requiring oil changes or other maintenance costs for exhaust systems. Studies have shown that this represents a 35 percent decrease in cost over time. Some calculations peg this to about 3 or 4 cents per mile of maintenance cost in an EV versus closer to 6 cents in an internal combustion car.
