There’s more choice than ever when it comes to used EVs. Unlike gas cars, which often require more and more maintenance as they age, EVs don’t have much regular upkeep. In fact, long-time EV drivers say that wiper blades and tires are really the only thing you need to keep an eye on in an electric vehicle. That means that buying a used one is likely to be a solid choice, as long as you either verify that the battery is still under warranty, purchase an extended warranty, or have someone verify that the battery is in good shape. Once you know the battery is good, then any low-cost EV can be a tremendous deal for your used car dollars. Here are the cheapest used EVs available today.

Volkswagen e-Golf

Without a doubt, the e-Golf wins the style wars in the cheapest EV category. Looking almost exactly like its elegant gas-powered sibling, the e-Golf lets you tool around town without drawing any eco-attention. The attention you’ll get is all due to the classic lines of the modern Golf, now with that special «Voltswagen» electric powertrain.

Ford Focus Electric

The Ford Focus Electric could be seen as a half-hearted attempt by Ford to have its cake and eat it, too. The Focus EV looked just like the versions with other powertrains, and it was built on the same assembly line. The idea was that Ford could build Focus models with whatever powertrain consumers wanted. Turns out, not that many people wanted the plug-in version, because Ford didn’t do the hard work of promoting it to its fullest. Still, this is a good, useable EV that remains a solid choice on the used market.

The most fun you could once have had for $49 a month, the Fiat 500e is the superior version of the brand’s small runabout, and Fiat’s only all-electric offering. Originally available only from dealers in California, the used market has opened up the joy to everyone.

Nissan Leaf

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to used versions of the world’s best-selling all-electric vehicle. The first-generation Nissan Leaf was launched in late 2010, and in the intervening years there plenty have moved on to good second homes thanks to the used market. Some of the early vehicles that were sold in hot climates had battery issues, but Nissan offered a fix for vehicles that suffered the most and battery reliability is no longer a main concern. If you confirm that the used Leaf you’re interested in didn’t come from one of these areas or if the capacity loss was taken care of, you can confidently buy a used Leaf today.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV

They say you get what you pay for, and the low initial MSRP of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV — just $15,495 after the $7,500 federal incentive — meant you didn’t get much. Not much space, not many amenities, not a lot of range.
